Jeffrey Secker (Memorial Scholarship)
Jeffrey Secker spent his working career as a nuclear engineer for Westinghouse. He designed the fuel placement in nuclear reactors to maximize safety and efficiency. He traveled the world representing Westinghouse working to upgrade and refuel nuclear power plants in many countries. He was recognized for his expertise in the field and published numerous scientific articles relating to nuclear engineering.
Mr. Secker was someone who loved the outdoors and spent much of his free time riding his bicycle and rock climbing. He “dreamed big” and liked getting to the tops of mountains, having summited many peaks, including Mt. Whitney, the “Grand” in Grand Teton National Park, and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. He was planning a trip to the Himalayas to see Everest, K-2 and Kanchenjunga when he was diagnosed with ALS, the disease that eventually ended his life. This scholarship is established by his sister, Anne Secker, former Hartnell College Foundation president and principal in Noland, Hamerly, Etienne & Hoss, a law firm in Salinas, to honor Jeff’s achievements and for those students who also dream big and who are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.
Impact
The impacts of Engineering makes everyone’s life better and easier. Our current societal and world-wide challenges, such as climate change, will be solved by advances in engineering. The Jeffrey Secker Science and Engineering Endowed Scholarship is established to benefit students with majors in all fields of engineering (excluding computer engineering) and physics, chemistry, biology and other sciences (excluding computer science).
