Dr. Pablo and Patricia Romero

The Pablo and Patricia Romero endowment was established in the spirit of academic excellence and a strong student and academic counselor relationship, like the one Pablo enjoyed with Joseph Martinez.

Pablo Romero arrived in Salinas as a teenage Mexican immigrant with a sixth grade education. He was a farmworker for several years before being drafted into the US Army. After his two year obligation, with the help of the GI Bill, he returned to school in 1972 and began his academic career at Hartnell. It was through his supportive relationship with Joseph Martinez at Hartnell that Pablo was able to make the leap from farmworker to scholar. He continued on to UC Irvine, as a University of California Regents scholar to complete his undergraduate coursework, and received his MD from UCSF in 1980. After finishing school and the residency program at Natividad Medical Center, Pablo stayed in Salinas, practicing Family Medicine and Obstetrics.

Impact

The Pablo and Patricia Romero endowment is for farmworkers, children of farmworkers, and low-income students. The recipients must qualify for the STEM program, maintain a 3.5 GPA and intend to go into healthcare fields such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, biotechnology, bioengineering, or medical research.
